Personalities - Bill Mazer

An institution for over thirty years in the New York area, Bill Mazer is as "New Bill MazerYork'' as they come. He started as a sportscaster upstate in Buffalo. After years of play-by-play and commentary on every sport available to him, Mazer got his shot at the big time in 1964 when WNBC radio went to the first all talk format. A legend was born.

Known for his acute knowledge of sports, Mazer was "challenged'' on the air by callers asking a wide range of questions on all sports, from weight lifting, to football, to lacrosse.

Based around this format, Mazer wrote several books detailing what was later to become  known as "sports trivia.''

Naturally, Bill made the transition to television on WNYW Channel 5. While there, he created a show called "Sports Extra,'' which became the model for television sports shows nationally. While on Channel 5's "Ten O'clock News'' Mazer again fielded trivia questions written by his audience. Rarely stumped, Bill went on to be dubbed the "Amazin'' Bill Mazer.

Although his knowledge of sports was thorough, Mazer's unique talent and intellect had yet to be tested. In 1992, WEVD conceived the perfect format for Bill. A morning talk show covering everything; not just sports, but a wide variety of subjects.  Every morning Bill talks about news, sports, health, personal finance, fitness and whatever his telephone audience brings to the breakfast table. Bill also interviews the most interesting guests found on radio. The "Mazer in the Voting" program holds up a mirror and reflects New York.

It's been six years of Bill Mazer interviewing, joking and cajoling his way through four and a half hours of the most informative and entertaining show on the air.  It's a natural for New York to wake up to Mazer in the Morning.

Mazer in the Morning, weekdays from 5:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., only on News/Talk 1050 WEVD , New York.
